Top Comment: I have been going to Dr. Amy David on Park, near 79th for a little over 20 years. She's been great and I couldn't recommend her enough.

Best Dentists in the City!!! Please Help! :)
Main Post:
Hello so I need a lot of work done. I am only 22 and do not plan on getting dental insurance because as far as I can tell it is literally a scam and I am probably better off shelling out thousands of dollars to fix my teeth since I didn't have the privilege of having them properly taken care of when I was a literal child. I really need suggestions for a great dentist that is trustworthy, reputable, and genuinely cares about the health and care of their patients. My biggest fear is getting scammed by a dentist for a lot of money only to have them not even actually fix my teeth, which has prevented me from committing to fixing them in my adult life. Please no negative replies about it being unlikely that such a dentist exists. Any leads would be so so greatly appreciated. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! :) I would prefer them to be either around Williamsburg, Astoria, or in the area of Midtown or Union Square.
Top Comment: Dental insurance is not a scam, I get it through my employer and it is cheap monthly premium. I recommend Gramercy Smiles on 23rd and Park.

I have extreme dental anxiety and haven't been in 15 years. I lost a tooth and have one severely broken one, and many cavities. I'm terrified and ashamed. Does anyone know a kind and gentle dentist in nyc?
Top Comment: Sky Dental in FiDi have been very good for me and a couple of people I know. Totally non-judgmental and not nagging at all, unlike other dentists I’ve had in the city.
Bitches with dental anxiety, where are you going to the dentist??
Main Post:
I’m searching for a new dentist in the city. I know for sure I have a cavity, and overall just need to go more consistently for cleanings- but I get so anxious and avoidant! It feels so silly as an adult woman to still feel this way, but I know I can’t be the only one!
Any recs on the upper west side would be great, but honestly I’ll go anywhere in Manhattan for a nice office with kind/non-judgmental staff and dentists!
ETA: this has been so helpful! thank you!!!!
Top Comment: 209 NYC has been really good to me, I had a very chic meltdown moment in their chair because I didn’t tell them I had severe anxiety about going to the dentist. After that they always prescribed me a Valium for the night before a visit and the morning of. Take that shit, it helps so much.

Kind Dentists in NYC?
Main Post:
Hello, I was homeless for a long time and also have severe mental illness so I know my teeth aren’t doing great but now I have medicaid’s dental coverage and really need to see a dentist. However, I’ve been putting it off because dentists have always been cruel and judgmental in my experience as a kid and teen- and i never even had a cavity, just minor gingivitis.
I know it sounds silly but even just the idea of being treated like that by a dentist activates a little PTSD and ignites mental health issues- I was abused as a kid and my parents weren’t taking care of me which is why I had stuff like gingivitis going on, and having dentists treat me like shit but just sitting there and taking it because I was too scared to tell anyone my parents were abusive and didn’t give me toothpaste is just a.... triggering memory. As I’m sure you can imagine. The neglect was extreme, i was never even enrolled in school. its dark shit that puts me in a tailspin if I start feeling like I did back then.
These were military base dentists so when I say “they treated me like shit”, I’m talking stuff that I now know constitutes malpractice. extreme aggression. abusive language.
Does anyone else on medicaid’s dental plan have a dentist they like who is kind and respectful? Maybe someone who specializes in patients with mental illness or trauma? my google searches are leading me nowhere.
Edit: thank you so much everyone I am overwhelmed by all of the kind words and helpful suggestions. I will be calling around the names suggested here for an appointment!! I’m not sure how much longer i would have sat and waited for the guts to pick an office at random from the medicaid list if I didn’t have these suggestions, you’ve all surely saved me from developing even more advanced dental harm <3
Top Comment: I don’t have any recommendations but I wanted to say I am so sorry for what you experienced as a child. You are a strong person to have overcome that and I hope the rest of your life is filled with all the good you deserve!
Relatively new practice owners in NYC, was it worth it?
Main Post:
Anybody who’s opened up an office or purchased in the 5 boroughs or Long Island in the past couple of years, do you think it was worth the costs and the stress compared to being an associate? (From things like high payroll relative to the rest of US to saturation/competition to quality of life changes). We all know practicing in NYC and Cali is already competing on hard mode but I want to get insight as someone who plans to stay in NYC long term (for family reasons).

Dentist rec that I can trust - one just said I need 6 fillings
Main Post:
I’ve been to the same dentist for my entire life, my last visit being 6 months ago. I went to a new one here that had great reviews, but at the end of my cleaning she went over everything and said I need 6!!!! Fillings!
I don’t know if I should trust her or not and would like to get a second opinion from someone I can really trust ASAP. I lose my insurance at the end of the month so if I really do need 6 fillings, I don’t have much time left.
I have terrible dental anxiety already and spent my whole walk home/time writing this post crying. So finding a place that would really take care of me would mean so much right now. I live in lower Manhattan but wouldn’t mind traveling a bit for the right doctor with availability for my tight timeline.
Top Comment: Share the x-rays the new dentist took with your old dentist for a second opinion.
